The volume under review is a collection of essays some of which have been published previously, some of which are based on events sponsored by the Summer Institute for the Preservation of the History of Economics. All of the essays are authored by recognized experts in the history of economics, and, as such, represent a notable contribution to this sub-discipline within economics. Chapter 1 provides the reader with a plan of the collection and its unifying theme: the interplay among the three competing philosophies of analytical egalitarianism (AE), practical egalitarianism (PE), and analytical hierarchicalism (AH). The result is a fascinating collection of essays for those readers who are well-versed in the history of economic thought: the novice may be intimidated by the authors' command of their chosen subject. What is one to make of this collection of essays? I offer these remarks. Every society must answer three questions: What to produce? How to produce? For whom to produce? Human society has developed three sets of institutions-economic, social, and political--to assist in answering those questions. Over the years, human society has developed three potential solutions-tradition, command, and the market--to those questions. According to the authors, human society has developed three competing philosophies to answer those questions. The first is AH, a theoretical system that recognizes the existence of inherent differences among us; for example, the public and the expert or inferior and superior races. This philosophy is subjected to a very harsh critique throughout this volume.
